late to the post but how are they not? the edgy word needs to be retired anyhow but nirvana's almost entire catalog is songs about depression, suicide, drug use, mental illness, homelessness, rape, more drug use, disenfranchisement etc etc. just because they inadvertently became a multi platinum act doesn't make them any less boundary pushing or controversial. or what do you consider ~edgy~?
