Britney Spears seeking 'substantial changes' to conservatorship
Despite living under a court-ordered conservatorship for more than a decade, Britney Spears has rarely commented on the arrangement, staying silent even as family members and fans have expressed concern over the control exerted over the 38 year old and her fortune.
That changed Monday, however, when lawyer Samuel D. Ingham III submitted a filing stating that Spears now believes the conservatorship "must be changed substantially in order to reflect the major changes in her current lifestyle and her stated wishes."
"Among those shifts," according to the New York Times, "was Spears's 'desire not to perform at this time,' following a four-year Las Vegas residency that ended in late 2017, and a one-off appearance the next year."
Spears has also expressed strong opposition to having her father, Jamie, return as conservator of her person or her estate. (Last year, he "stepped back" from this role and was temporarily replaced by professional conservator Jodi Montgomery.)
"Without in any way waiving her right to seek termination of this conservatorship in the future," Ingham wrote, "Britney would like Ms. Montgomery’s appointment as conservator of her person to be made permanent." The document also makes it clear that Spears does not expect her father to go quietly, and as such will seek the counsel of a law firm "with substantial expertise" in handling such complicated legal matters.
A status hearing in the case is scheduled for Wednesday in Los Angeles.
