Starting in the mid 1980s, [Martha Wash's] studio vocals were used in numerous successful dance songs without her permission. Models lip synced to her voice both in music videos and during live performances. As a result, Wash's identity was unknown and she was denied credit and royalties for many of the songs she recorded. This included platinum-selling song "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)" as she had been labeled "unmarketable" due to her weight.
lmao the model even took to stage at the VMAs when C+C factory were announcing or accepting an award (can't remember which) to thank god for giving her the opportunity to show everyone that she can really sing. god must have changed his mind then.
My parents thought that for years, and I remembered thinking I was the one that was wrong because I was like "That sounds like the lady who sung 'It's Raining Men'." I feel validated now, lol.
This is really fucking upsetting.
