I love these books, in spite of the fact that there pretty incompetent mysteries (the one rule of a good detective novel is that the reader should be able to figure out the mystery on their own based on the clues the hero learn but these novels are Deux ex Machina bingo cards).
As with the Harry Potter novels, JK knows how to write compelling characters I just can't help caring about.
I haven't tried the TV adaptation though, as I'm afraid it'd be a disappointment (for once, the guy who play Strike isn't ugly enough!). Do fans of the book recommend it?
The adaptations are surprisingly good, the screenwriter clearly knows how to adapt overlong/bad JKR plotlines and should’ve done HP... they cut exactly where they should and make actual necessary changes while keeping the spirit of the story there. Somehow I’ve enjoyed the books even knowing they can be bizarre and as you say, glaringly bad mysteries... but the show manages to actually make decent television out of them. The main actors are also really good.
I know people thought TV Strike was too good looking or young or whatever, but I actually never imagined Strike to be completely ugly lol, just kind of rough looking/average but compelling, and the books say he’s in his 30s so I always imagined a young guy.
my biggest problem with lethal white was when strike figured out who did it and why and called robin and then the book said "then strike told robin what he figured out" or something similar and i just had to laugh it was so bad
totally agree with you on the failure of these mysteries. :/ i'm not sure why it all went so wrong, because the first few HP books are decent little mysteries! you'd think she'd be able to adapt that to an actual detective novel. i won't be reading the newest one later this year, especially since i'd just be hate reading at this point in my relationship with the author.
and honestly, to me the tv adaptations are not better. i do like the two actors, but the convoluted way in which the mysteries develop doesn't really lend itself to a tv series. i feel like if someone hadn't read the books they'd have no idea what was going on in the show. i hate JK rowling's handling of romance, as well as robin's backstory, and those aspects are a little better in the show purely because of the personal charisma of the actors.
