ONTD Original: Musicians Covering Depeche Mode

Aug 14, 2020 21:52

Depeche Mode have been blessing our ears since 1981 and many pop and rock artists and producers have cited them as their inspiration or reason they got into music. Even Lady Gaga herself at some point was going to make a cover of their song but unfortunately we're still waiting for that one.

So, to celebrate the fact that they're going to be inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year and recently released their LiVE SPiRiTS concert film, and also to try and answer jellycar's media final exam question "Why do Depeche Mode make the most royalties out of every musician?”, let's look at the massive list of covers of their songs other artists have done over the years. This is a shortened version since my post got rejected for being HUGE - Depeche Mode's impact!

Other artists who covered "Just Can't Get Enough": Anna Tsuchiya (you may recognize her as the singer of Nana's/Black Stones' songs from anime Nana), The Saturdays

Rammstein - Stripped

Trivia Time: This song was part of the official Depeche Mode Tribute album called "For the Masses".
Reportedly, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson and Foo Fighters also wanted to take part in it but couldn't due to schedule complications.

Veruca Salt - Somebody

This cover was featured in the 2006 movie adaptation of the musical Zombie Prom in which RuPaul also stars.

The Smashing Pumpkins - Never Let Me Down Again

This cover was on the tribute album "For the Masses" as well as the legendary parody movie that gave as Chris Evans with a banana in his ass, Not Another Teen Movie. That movie has a surprisingly amazing soundtrack consisting of covers of such iconic 80s artists as New Order, The Smiths, OMD, Nena, Modern English etc.

Another Depeche Mode cover song used in the movie:
Scott Weiland (of Stone Temple Pilots) - But Not Tonight (it's a very beautiful version and I recommend you check it out).

Ane Brun & Vince Clarke - Fly on the Windscreen

Notable for being a cover by Vince Clarke of the Erasure and Yazoo fame who was actually the original member of Depeche Mode and is solely responsible for writing and composing their debut album Speak & Spell and their hit song Just Can't Get Enough. He left the band right after the album's release in 1981.

Other notable covers:
a-ha - A Question of Lust
Jimmy Sommerville (of Bronski Beat and The Communards) - But Not Tonight
In Flames - Everything Counts
Pain - Behind the Wheel
Sandra - Free Love
Ghost - Waiting For The Night
Moonspell - Sacred

Honorable Mentions

Hilary Duff - Reach Out (samples "Personal Jesus")

I'm not sure if it's Hilary herself or her producers but someone on the team clearly has good taste because it's not the only Hilary Duff song to sample Depeche Mode.

Other Hilary Duff songs that sample Depeche Mode: Dreamer (samples "Just Can't Get Enough").

Ja Rule - Life Ain't A Game (samples "Strangelove")

Where's Ja?! The song appeared on the soundtrack for the 2001 movie The Fast and the Furious.

Cinema Bizarre - Escape To The Stars (samples "Everything Counts")

Even mid-2000s emo bands were fans of Depeche Mode!

Bloodhound Gang - The Ballad Of Chasey Lain (borrows the melody from "Sea of Sin")

Bloodhound Gang are an interesting case since they actually started as a Depeche Mode cover band and are self-proclaimed Depeche Mode fanboys, which you might not be able to tell from their own material.

Other Bloodhound Gang songs that were influenced by Depeche Mode: Mama Say (references lyrics to "Blasphemous Rumours") and Boom feat. Vanilla Ice (samples "People are People").

They also regularly perform Depeche Mode songs at their own gigs but I won't link that because they're bad.

The Great Giana Sisters Intro Theme (samples "Just Can't Get Enough")

The feminist version of Super Mario Bros. and a great musical taste to boot!
