The Worst Emmy Snubs in Recent History (that I can remember off the top of my head right now)
In the spirit of using my energy getting angry on behalf of other people, and not productively for myself, please join me for what I personally consider The Worst Emmy Snubs in Recent History (that I can remember off the top of my head right now).
Bob Odenkirk, Rhea Seehorn, and Tony Dalton for Season 5 of AMC's Better Call Saul
One of the best shows on television right now, and even better than the show it spun off from (Breaking Bad), is AMC's Better Call Saul. While the show has received acting noms before for lead Bob Odenkirk (2015-2017, 2019), as well as Giancarlo Espostio (2020) and Jonathan Banks (2015, 2019), they are not enough and I, for one, am NOT satisfied. Rhea Seehorn, whose character Kim Wexler is the heart of the show, has been snubbed for five years and this year is by far the most egregious. Tony Dalton, who plays the delightfully awful Lalo Salamanca, is also a standout who deserves to be recognized. And while Bob Odenkirk has been great throughout the show, it is slap in the fact that he is not being recognized for this season, which was arguably his best -- never before has an actor made you feel so much as his character [spoilers]drinks his own pee.
Basically the entire cast of HBO's The Wire but especially Idris Elba, Michael K Williams, Andre Royo, and Lawrence Gilliard Jr.
The Wire as a whole is a show that was not recognized for how good it was at the time but did you know that it only ever received two emmy nominations and neither were for acting??? Disgusting. The Wire's biggest competition for the 55th Primetime Emmy Awards (the year of its first and, in my opinion, best season) were HBO's own The Sopranos and Six Feet Under. Did HBO not push The Wire as hard because it was in its first season or because they didn't think the standout actors of the show (all of whom are black) would have a chance? For a show that featured an ensemble of great and strong performances, this is unacceptable.
Samira Wiley and Danielle Brooks from Netflix's Orange is the New Black
While this is another show with a huge cast, the standouts of the show were basically only like five people and Taylor Schilling, despite being one of 3 actors from the show to receive an Emmy nomination, was not one of them. The most deserving (besides Uzo Aduba and Kate Mulgrew) to receive a nomination instead? Samira Wiley and Danielle Brooks as Poussey Washington and Tasty Jefferson, respectively. Both gave outstanding performances that, despite being in a huge cast, made you eager for more of them on your screen.
Zach Woods from HBO's Silicon Valley
Silicon Valley is another show that ultimately went on for too long and had its fair share of shitty actors. The one shining bright spot throughout? The character of Donald "Jared" Dunn played by Zach Woods, who was once bullied off the internet by ONTD. Zach Woods was so good that he made a show that starred annoying douchebags TJ Miller and Thomas Middleditch enjoyable. This is a gargantuan feat that should have been rewarded with an emmy nomination.
