It's sad. My mom's childhood best friend fell for one of these. She thinks she's been in a relationship with a Saudi prince for 5 years now (posts about him all the time on FB) and she's been married for over 25 years and still is. She's an easy target because she has mental health issues and is an alcoholic. It's gotten so bad that my mom had to cut ties with her completely because she refused to get help.
There are a bunch of Dr. Phil episodes like this, and it's crazy how common it is. Even mentally healthy but lonely people fall prey to it all the time, it's absolutely awful.
Some people just want so badly to believe because they don’t want to admit they’ve been conned. These guys are also very good at using abusive and manipulative tactics to get people to do what they want. I fuck with enough of these scammers on places like words with friends that I can spot them a mile away. A friend started talking to a man on Instagram and she sent me the pics to ask what I thought. By the way he talked alone I knew he was a scammer, and his exact picture was one that’s been used by multiple scammers contacting me on games and social media. I told her this. I showed her screen caps of their pictures. She still refused to believe it at first. “But what if this is the REAL guy in the picture?” I told her ok, but don’t send him any money or gift cards.
She finally believed me when he started asking her to open a bank account to put money in for him “from the UN” because his account was having issues. LOL
My friend's mom blew up her marriage over an online relationship that was definitely a scam. My friend had discovered it and was trying to pull her out, but she just wasn't having it. It was such a sad slow motion trainwreck.
