Amazon is developing a new television series based on the popular Fallout video game franchise with Westworld's Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. The project has been given a "substantial" series commitment. Besthesda's Todd Howard will serve as an EP.

Fallout debuted in 1997 and deals with a 22/23rd century world post-nuclear war. American's cultural aesthetic never moved forward from the 1950s. Knowing nuclear annihilation was imminent, the government created underground fallout shelters throughout the country, where the main character from each game originated.

Other video-game-turned-tv-series currently in development include The Last of Us at HBO and Halo at Showtime. Another franchise, Borderlands, is being developed for film.
