I really, really wish Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had a better handle on race. I find her attempts at talking about race shallow at best, and at worst intellectually dishonest. From her claim that reparations be about class (when talking to Ta-nehisi Coates) to her insistence that Latinos are Black (yes girl, the Black Latinos are Black), she just consistently fails to properly contextualize issues of race and racism.

Yikes. Didn't know all that. Hopefully sometime can collect her.

Dinner learning that white human traffickers got huge reparations when they were forced to'free' their Black captives, my view on reparations has shifted.

Wholeheartedly agree. Also her whole thing with braiding her hair making her closer to her African roots was terrible

Sigh. I remember that. She also did that thing where she talked about how she was a descendant of Jews who had to flee from Spain at a Hanukkah event. She repeatedly does the liberal over-identification with minority groups and uses ancestry claims as shorthand for identity. As if it's not bad enough when white people do it, It's so insidious coming from a Latina. She really should know better.

It is crazy to me that no one ever takes her to task for how off-base she is! Like, a whole Ta-Nehisi Coates didn't gather her for saying reparations isn't about slavery, but about the New Deal and redlining, which affected Latinos too. Like, he had the opportunity to gently remind her that reparations ARE about slavery and that they don't preclude other economic reforms that need to happen to address past wrongs, but he just didn't! She starts by saying all struggles matter (but don't erase individual struggles), but then says that reparations are about class and unequal wealth distribution. WHAT????

I know I’m all late and shit but barely catching up on my ONTD. I know AOC is messy but didn’t know she pulled a Gina Rodriguez.
This is what happen though when people treat politics like Stan wars. If you dare try to take AOC to task you’ll just have thousands of people chiming how she’s better than xyz other candidate. The idolization of politicians is not good. Especially when they’re just at the beginning of their careers. AOC has made a cultural impact but people who act like she’s infallible are annoying.

IAWTC so hard. In addition to the current cultural impulse to treat politicians, especially young attractive ones, like celebrities, I think the unwarranted amount of hate she gets from the right shields her from legitimate (and much-needed) critiques. No one wants to be accused of piling on her, but critiquing her ideas is not critiquing her as a person!

at least she seems like someone who is willing to learn and hear people out, unlike every other politician in the world.

Why do black folks always have to settle for someone that has to learn?

Is she willing to learn? She’s been a public figure for a couple years now and continues to make the same bad faith statements about race.

People don't talk about this.
