Indie Film Release Guide: June 19th [An ONTD Original]

Some theaters have begun reopening, and at least one of the films listed below will be available in select theaters as well as via VOD, while another is available at drive-in theaters only. But for the most part, new films are still available for home consumption in virtual cinemas, streaming on paid services, or for rent or purchase.

The films listed are from studios other than the “Big Six” - Paramount, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Columbia/Sony and Disney. Films available VOD can be rented or purchased through retailers like Apple and Google. Check out the posts from the past few weeks for more movies that may have already come to VOD: June 12th, June 5th, and May 29th.

Miss Juneteenth

Genre: Drama
Plot: A former beauty queen and single mom prepares her rebellious teenage daughter for the "Miss Juneteenth" pageant.
What you should know: Nominated for the Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2020, and won Best Texan Film at SXSW 2020.

Genre: Thriller
Plot: The story of five Cuban political prisoners who had been imprisoned by the United States since the late 1990s on charges of espionage and murder.
What you should know: It’s in English, Spanish and Russian; nominated for Best Film at the 2019 Venice Film Festival.

Storyline: A cinematic journey around the United States following migratory beekeepers and their truckloads of honey bees as they pollinate the flowers that become the fruits, nuts and vegetables we all eat.
What you should know: Director Peter Nelson has been directing documentaries since the late 1990's.

Genre: Documentary
Storyline: World renowned wildlife photographer Amos Nachoum has one final photographic dream remaining - to photograph a Polar Bear underwater, while swimming alongside it.
What you should know: It’s in English, Hebrew and Inuktitut.

Genre: Comedy, Drama
Plot: When seriously ill teenager Milla falls madly in love with smalltime drug dealer Moses, it’s her parents’ worst nightmare. But as Milla’s first brush with love brings her a new lust for life, things get messy and traditional morals go out the window.
What you should know: It was a nominee for Best Film at the 2019 Venice Film Festival, and won a couple of smaller awards there.

Plot: Shatters the too-often invisible otherizing of Black women in America and reclaims the true narrative as told in their own words. Illuminates the history of how we got here, dismantles the false framework of the present-day reality, celebrates the extraordinary heritage of exceptional Black women, and ignites hope for the next generation.
What you should know: This is director Oge Egbuonu’s first feature film; she was previously an associate producer on the 2016 film Loving.
