i'm white and i posted the blackout square last night before going to bed and before i saw a lot of the backlash, but didn't use the hashtag or anything (just the #blackouttuesday one but not the main blm one)

idk if i should delete it now or what but i've also been posting incessantly in the last week about resources, donations, amplifying the voices of black activists, etc. for some reason i thought the blackout tuesday was specifically for non-black people in order to elevate black voices? but now i'm just confused all around. i feel like it was started by well-intentioned people but now it's gotten out of hand, especially with people who think just posting it once is enough.

no it's fine, especially if you posted it in the correct tag and none of the other ones. the complaint was mostly towards the celebs/accounts who have done absolutely nothing but post a black box and called it a day

totally, my instagram feed is black square after black square but i've never seen a lot of these people say a single word about black lives...... HMMMMM

i think this is the main issue with it. so many people are just posting the square, and then not posting any resources in their stories, so it doesn't really achieve anything other than a 'see guys i'm not posting any selfies or ads today!'

I made sure to post links in my podcastblackout episode, to give some back story. Mine was focused more on Black women who have been murdered because often times Black women lead the way and end up forgotten. I didn't want that to happen this time. It seemed simple enough for me.

from my understanding the point of blackout tuesday is to not post about yourself but to post resources and elevate black voices. my personal instagram is private, but i run a fan account for a celeb with 7k followers so i've been trying to post different resources and things in posts and stories.

This

It's been so.. I don't even know the word

To see post after post about BLM and how terrifying the protests are and the scary shit cops are doing and then out of no where I get a selfie from some random people or some celeb posting an endorsement post. I think posting the black square and just realizing not everything is about you for a second is a good idea. Like I don't wanna see people promoting Fucking leggings right now or some C list celeb promoting their podcast.

Every time I see an ad or something from the instagram algorithm, it's very jarring with everything that's going on. Your podcasts, your leggings, whatever...are just so unimportant right now. 7k isn't the largest following, but sharing safety tips for attending protests, sharing bail out funds, literature to help educate, etc seems a lot more important than sharing updates on my celeb. And I figure, I have the following so it's the least I can do.

thank you, that makes a lot more sense! i already stopped posting other things (like i was doing one of those 30 day music challenges) because it just felt so trite and disrespectful, but i'll continue to post resources etc

I rarely post on my private instagram, but on my fan account, we were posting like favorite photoshoots and promoting a birthday fanvideo project for the celeb I have the account for before the protests started...but we've put a stop to that for now because it's so unimportant compared to what's going on right now. Better use our following to post resources. Some people have unfollowed, but I don't care. This is more important.

Actually the point of blackout tuesday was to not post at all, take a break from social media in order to reflect and educate, which ofc people were quick to criticise and rightfully so. Now is not the time to be silent.

Same it was 3am when I posted it. I did however make another post about donating.

I had the square up for a few hours today on FB, but removed it when I read that it messed up the FB algorithm by drowning out all other posts. (Or something, it was all very technical.)
