The kid was definitely guilty and the ending of the book confirmed it IMO. I feel like the show changed the ending just for the sake of it and there was no need to. [Link to spoiler] They should have killed off Hope like in the book to really highlight that Jacob probably was guilty, and they should have killed Jacob too and left Laurie in a coma instead.

I honestly hated Andy's character in the book (he was so blind to his kid's faults, and idk whether it was intentional on the author's part, but I feel like he had barely anything positive to say about any of the female characters) but he came off as more sympathetic on the show.

are you me??? every time he talked about a female character I was like this man is a misogynist. like I HATED the way he described Sarah, like being way too descriptive of a 15 year old

Thank you for pointing that out! I remember he described her as having a "muffin top" and he kept describing her body shape and how he could see Jacob with a girl like that like ew, stop dude - first of all gross, second of all your kid is up for murder soooo maybe cool it on the matchmaking for a while?

I also hated the way he described Laurie's friends, and how he kept implying that Laurie was a bad or hysterical mother just because she wasn't blinded to Jacob's faults like he was

Mhm! And I feel like he said some weird stuff about the girl Matt was messing around with (but that was a whole other thing because I’m sure that girl was really young too)

Yeah I felt like they changed the ending slightly just so they could do that typical thing of saying that actually it’s not like the ending of the book, and even book fans will be surprised, but the actual changes were so pointless that it definitely felt like they changed events just for the sake of it.

I’m also confused by why Jacob was even sitting on the bed acting weird and in different clothes if they then wanted to reveal that he didn’t kill Hope on the beach after all, what a lame misdirect

I think the outfit change was used as a way to show that the parents were paying more attention, they failed to realize their kid had a knife and was into cutting porn previously so the fact they noticed his shirt I assumed was to show the ~growth but I could be reading way too into it.
