I'm a GenX and the only thing I had going for me is half-decent college tuition. I left college with a 4 year only owing about $18,000. (4 year, state college, used work study) I attended 1998-2002 and I swear I was the last gen to get decent affordable college.

but that's it. I've been fucked along with everyone else, I'm 40.

Until the 90s families had benefits, livable wages, health insurance, etc. I've been at a small town real estate company for 18+ years now, and I'm finally making $15/hour and I'm kinda grateful. Of course, the cost to live here is SO much cheaper than the country (US)

Yeah I'm grateful that tuition wasn't as insane as it is now (although it wasn't exactly free either). Also I graduated from college in 1998 and the job market was really good then. Then 9/11 and the dotcom crash happened and that fucked over a lot of people.

People always forget about the dotcom crash

Yeah that's the only thing Gen Xers really won out on, was better college tuition.

weren't housing prices a bit more affordable too? I feel like they've gotten so bad in the last 10-15 years at least in my area

Our housing market in rural upper Michigan is so far removed from the rest of the country. The prices here have gone up, but I can find you a $40,000 livable house in a town with a hospital and grocery store. 😂

Employment opportunities suck, and we get 300+ inches of snow every winter too. 😂 so there's that.

That's 100% true, but what I think her comment could mean is that x-gens and millennials are voting for assholes as presidents/politicians all over the world and it's true. I don't have specific demographic numbers (only Mexico which si where I'm from and currently live) but they have had heavy influence in electoral processes from some years now.

I'm an elder millennial ('85) and my generation is NO BETTER when it comes to politics, basic human/minorities rights, etc. It's very scary tbh because they are already raising 1 or 2 kids with the same mind-set so...

I think the best psychological line in the sand between Gen X and Millenials is the question if you were a functioning adult when 9/11 happened/you could have voted in the Bush/Gore election. Because the dominant cultural angst of the pre-9/11 generation is wild.

Imagine people believed this unironically: We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our great war is a spiritual war... Our great depression is our lives.

And also this: Choose good health, low cholesterol and dental insurance. Choose fixed-interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisure wear and matching luggage. [...]Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth.[..]Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pissing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked-up brats you have spawned to replace yourselves. Choose your future. Choose life . . . ( ... )
