On the surface, his character (and the show) seems ridiculous. he voices a HORSE who back on the 90's was on a very famous tv show. he is now a washed up late middle aged has been with really no responsibilities and a completely lost moral compass.

but the show really digs deep under the surface and exposes a character who is in so much deep, layered pain, both committed by others or self-inflicted, that he does just the worst things. This is the main character we need to connect to.

so, in order for the show to work, you really needed a lead voice who would both fit within the confines of this absurd world (the show can be laugh out loud hilarious) but also have the depth to cut through that absurdity on the surface to find the dark layers beneath.

It is a huge credit to Arnett's skills that thru his voice, he makes you really empathize with Bojack. There was an episode in one of the later seasons where it is just him, talking. The animation in this episode is minimal, so it really relies on his voice, and let me tell you, it is truly painful listening to the words he speaks.

there are many many moments like that--where your heart breaks for him, where you hate him, where you are horrified by him, when you laugh at him, when you hope for him--because of something he says and the way his voice sounds when he says it.

I can honestly say that no other show I have ever seen ever represented the depths of mental illness, addiction and abuse as well as this one has. I connected with the themes of the show on a level I have rarely felt as I have thru this character.

With Arnett's performance, I vacillate between is it a case of "i never knew he had it in him" (GOB BLUTH!) or was this an instance of the role and the actor being a perfect match because I can't imagine an actor who could possibly play this role without having experienced the abyss in real life.
