How 'Birds of Prey' Deconstructs the Male Gaze

Feb 10, 2020 13:30

#BirdsofPrey is a comic book film that is quietly yet profoundly different, not in the story it shares but in how it is told https://t.co/tFjXYXsU8G
- The Hollywood Reporter (@THR) February 8, 2020

-Writer Ciara Wardlow argues that Cathy Yan's recently-released Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) is one of the most effective deconstructions of the male gaze seen in mainstream film

-Female authorship is present in every aspect of the film, from Harley's VO narration to the female director (Cathy Yan), screenwriter (Christina Hodson), and producer (star Margot Robbie)

-Throughout the movie, the camera follows Harley's actions and desires rather than her body, a choice further emphasized by the contrast between her costuming in Birds of Prey as opposed to Suicide Squad (the full piece is worth a read)
