It's an untouched industry I have very little knowledge about and would like to learn more, but at least in America for photographers and videographers, from a Britney Spears doc I saw last year a lot of paps work freelance and sell their shit to tabloid publications. That was also the case for a Swedish short story I read by John Ajvide Lindqvist about a pap photographer stalking some Swedish-turned-Hollywood actress. They pay sweet bucks to whomever gets those exclusive pics/videos first, so the brutal hustle/aggression that these paps use to target their "prey" (the ones that aren't called in for promo) - it's all a little clearer now. And while not about the tabloid industry, I learned a lot of shit that goes down in these ~exclusive coverage industries in general from the film Nightcrawler as well. It's fiction ofc, but the extensive background research that went into it by the director/screenwriter is impressive. I have no idea about tabloid columnists tho.
