I empathize a lot with kids who spent their childhoods in the public eye. I can barely imagine what that can do to a person. I was a mess when I was in middle school and especially high school. I attempted suicide when I was 11, I had undiagnosed mental problems and I would have cracked, honestly if I were some famous kid star with that being published everywhere.
Oh, Ariel Winter. I have such a soft spot for her. :(
Idk Hollywood just doesn't have the protection it needs for child stars, especially with how prevalent drugs and paedophilia is. I don't want to even think those rumours going around about Heather O'Rourke are true bc her autopsy confirmed her bowel obstruction was congenital, present since birth (those things are actually common). Unfortunately, it went misdiagnosed. So, it was likely congenital and not [Spoiler (click to open)]because of anal assault. But I won't dismiss the stories directly either bc it does happen (like, poor Corey Feldman). But her mother seemed very protective of her and with her always? Wouldn't she have known if something happened to her daughter?
Don't get me started on Brit tabloids, sis. I hate to say it, but J.K. Rowling represented that shit fairly accurately through the character of Rita Skeeter.

It's an untouched industry I have very little knowledge about and would like to learn more, but at least in America for photographers and videographers, from a Britney Spears doc I saw last year a lot of paps work freelance and sell their shit to tabloid publications. That was also the case for a Swedish short story I read by John Ajvide Lindqvist about a pap photographer stalking some Swedish-turned-Hollywood actress. They pay sweet bucks to whomever gets those exclusive pics/videos first, so the brutal hustle/aggression that these paps use to target their "prey" (the ones that aren't called in for promo) - it's all a little clearer now. And while not about the tabloid industry, I learned a lot of shit that goes down in these ~exclusive coverage industries in general from the film Nightcrawler as well. It's fiction ofc, but the extensive background research that went into it by the director/screenwriter is impressive. I have no idea about tabloid columnists tho.
