Thanks for all your hard work OP!

Did you dislike your private education, ONTD? Were you surrounded by under-baked meat pies (a.k.a. pasty white people)?

I went to public school my whole life and had an awesome education, but it was public school in really wealthy districts. I was surrounded by white people whose parents were incredibly successful, like make the newspaper for what they did level of accomplished, and most were low-range multi millionaires. I always felt super embarrassed by my family and it was only later I realized we were really average.

Ironically everyone in my year ended up a total loser (including yours truly).

Like people either went into the arts where they flopped but still have the money for mommy and daddy to keep them floating or they floundered a bit and then got a PHD because academia is at least respectful (I know sooooo many people with PHDs). I know multiple people who are waiting for their parents to kick the bucket so they can get their inheritance and live out the rest of their mediocre lives in luxury. And they aren't shy about telling people that their plan either. It's weird.

Gah, thanks love and THANK YOU for all your wonderful insight in the comments! <3

I don't know what it is, but it's so easy for some of us to feel ashamed that we don't have more unlike others. I'm not remotely on the breadline and won't pretend that I am (by the American definition, I'm lower-middle class), but my family never seems to have enough money for the things we need at times, no matter how hard we work and no matter the insurance my dad gets from his job at the MGM (but now that I'm over 25, I'm not under his plan anymore). My mum's a hairdresser and she makes a little more money at her new salon job than her old one (she was, unfortunately fired for a super petty reason) but yeah... the last three weeks, she has made NO tips. Early January, she was making more, but now, NOTHING. Unfortunately, public service jobs rely on tips and I remember seeing this extremely ignorant YouTube video about how we shouldn't tip waiters in America bc it's somehow disrespectful??? There was even a wank post here, I think last year about this too and it's like, you could tell which comments were from people that never had to depend on tips for their income.

Anyway, this sense of shame and humiliation around not being better off financially (if not necessarily rich), I'm trying to decide if a lot of that has to do with making shit tons of money equating success in Western culture?

I know multiple people who are waiting for their parents to kick the bucket so they can get their inheritance

Whoa, damn! Broadcast that BOLDLY to the world, people!

they're hard, but let's be honest: the majority of people getting PhDs are middle or upper middle class adults who are (a) able to ACCESS academia (bc the barriers it puts up to working class people are all-but insurmountable) and (b) procrastinating on entering the whitecollar 9-5 workforce (again, because they CAN).

This is so true. I'm lower middle-class and kinda want to go back for my M.A. in screenwriting or journalism (I have a B.A. in film and screenwriting), but... I'm struggling to pay off my student loans as much as it is now with a part-time minimum wage job. I mean, a part of me would LOVE to get some kind of PhD when I'm 36, but fuck me, that'll never happen. I don't have the expenses (or time) for that! All these people getting PhDs don't have to worry about money or living paycheck to paycheck or they come from a family of white-collar bitches already, so they're all set. They already have connections to get the jobs after school (if and when they leave).

Completely agree! I really hope you are able to break into screenwriting/journalism bb. For what it's worth, these posts are incredible and I love reading them every time
