Tony Romo dumped Jessica Simpson over John Mayer

In her new book 'Open Book' Jessica Simpson talks about her past 2 year relationship with retired Dallas Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo that ended in 2009 when he accused her of cheating with singer and ex-boyfriend John Mayer. Jessica says that she was at her parents house when she ran into Mayer who emailed her about the run-in, which Romo found.
“[Tony] accused me of seeing John behind his back. I hadn’t cheated on Tony at all. But I could not lie and say I hadn’t even seen [Mayer]. Tony didn’t believe that (nothing happened) for a second. And within that second, he broke up with me right there. Two years, gone with an email.”
Simpson felt confident Romo would not admit the real reason for the break up to the media because "it would imply that he wasn't enough for me.”
“Tony soon realized I was telling the truth,Of course I didn’t cheat on him. But our breakup had been so ugly that it shocked me into realizing it had been necessary.”
At the time of the split, Simpson said Mayer had been wanting to get back together, “practically asking my parents for my hand in marriage while I was in a serious relationship” and "swearing to me up and down that he was a changed man.” referring to the situation as the “closing scenes of sweeping, epic love story, [in which] the dark romantic hero had beaten out the star quarterback,”
She quickly learned the singer hadn’t changed at all. “Now I knew the truth. I was a pet bird,” she wrote, claiming Mayer was just using her for song “material.”
“All this time, all those years, he was breaking up with me to torture himself enough to get good material."
