British Author Alex Christofi asks Book Twitter if they cut their books in half

British author Alex Christofi, known for his 2015 debut novel Glass, started a ruckus on Book!Twitter by asking if anyone else “cut long books in half to make them more portable?” Unsurprisingly people had strong opinions.
This is a brilliant idea but why cut lengthwise and not horizontally

That's a very privilaged idea. A single book can be passed on to any number of new people to read and can keep circulating as long as it stays together. This just kills the book to never be read by anyone else. Not everyone can afford to by a new book every time they want.

But it's not completely unusable for others. He can read them in that state, can't he? Surely they can also read books cut in half if they chose to. So dramatic!
