Yesterday my colleague called me a 'book murderer' because I cut long books in half to make them more portable. Does anyone else do this? Is it just me? pic.twitter.com/VQUUdJMpwT

British author Alex Christofi, known for his 2015 debut novel Glass, started a ruckus on Book!Twitter by asking if anyone else “cut long books in half to make them more portable?” Unsurprisingly people had strong opinions.

This is a brilliant idea but why cut lengthwise and not horizontally

I do the same with really long dvds! https://t.co/neubIymvjQ pic.twitter.com/s6mHgrKdlZ

Pros: Definitely practical
Cons: Looks like you're carrying around the central clue from a film noir about a troubled detective on the trail of a serial killer https://t.co/twvbwKmJ1T

Yesterday my colleague called me “a book murderer” because I like to keep little a taco in between the pages every few chapters, as a treat. Does anyone else do this? Is it just me? pic.twitter.com/JQjb6R5WD1

Get a kindle. That’s even more portable and please stop cutting up books.

Please send me that copy of Infinite Jest so that I might adopt it into a loving, warm, and mostly-same home, rebind that which has been torn asunder, and shelve it amongst its brethren. Please. pic.twitter.com/VPs9VdlKhK

Absolutely no book reader would actually do this. This is a tweet for reactions, and it made me viscerally angry
- Marina Camp (@WomanInformed) January 21, 2020

That's a very privilaged idea. A single book can be passed on to any number of new people to read and can keep circulating as long as it stays together. This just kills the book to never be read by anyone else. Not everyone can afford to by a new book every time they want.

But it's not completely unusable for others. He can read them in that state, can't he? Surely they can also read books cut in half if they chose to. So dramatic!

Our Twitter algorithms alerted us to a murder that was trending. Of course we investigated. Not exactly what we expected... 🪓 📖

Because damaging something that I spent hard earned money on seems both disrespectful and wasteful.

Are you so clumsy and messy that you can't read and keep your book in fairly good condition?

ONTD, do you cut up your books for whatever reason?
