Bret Easton Ellis while being interviewed for a podcast, talked about the failed film project Golden Suicides, about Theresa Duncan and Jeremy Blake, two deeply in love up-and-coming artists who suddenly committed suicide one after the other under mysterious circumstances. The film started gaining interest when Ellis optioned the script and Gus Van Sant jumped aboard to direct in 2010. In 2011, Gaspar Noé began to circle the project.

Ellis explained in exasperated disbelief: “We had Ryan Gosling wanting to play him and Naomi Watts wanting to play her...and we had them, but Gaspar Noé said, ‘No, they’re wrong. They’re wrong for the part. We could have got financing for that...no, you don’t trust Gaspar.”

After that, the project took a big hit and essentially went into limbo. Both Gosling and Watts have aged out of the project now so we can look forward to Golden Suicides directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet.
