Is picard going to be playing a cranky old man like he did in those future episodes in TNG or are they retconning that.

His cranky old man bit was annoying AF and always trying to get people to do whatever he wants and ordering people around DESPITE having NO authority.

Wasn't that because his future self had Alzheimer's? And then when he was back in the present he had Dr. Crusher test him for signs - probably started preventative care ASAP

I think it wasn't alzheimers.
His future self was living in separate time periods at the same time due to what happened in the past. He wasn't sick, but everyone else thought he was sick.

He was sick, too. In the future he had advanced Irumodic Syndrome, which has confusion and delusion as symptoms, so that didn't help with his credibility.

Future Picard had something called "Irumodic Syndrome" which was clearly made up for the show, and for all intents and purposes is basically Alzheimer's (similar issues with confusion and memory loss).
