there are so many places in a restaurant where your experience can hit a snag, and it can be the fault of the customer, the host, the server, the bartender, the cook(s), the manager... i know in the restaurant i worked, tips were only split among servers, the bartender, and the busboy, so if the host or the cooks messed up it's not like tipping badly penalized them in any way -- it mostly just screwed over servers that were making 3.14 an hour. in a country where a lot of restaurant staff make like 1/3 of minimum wage and rely on tips for the bulk of their income, i kind of feel like everybody should work in a restaurant for six months so they can chill the fuck out and learn to tip and not be assholes
