Bong, Mendes, Scorsese and Tarantino seem fairly solidly into the Oscar nominee list at this point.

But it's quite rare for the DGA and the Academy to be in complete alignment; there's been a 5-for-5 correspondence only twice since 1998 (in 2005 and 2009). But it usually doesn't go much lower than 4-for-5 (other than the truly wild 2-for-5 year in 2012).

So in a way, if you're Todd Phillips or Greta Gerwig, not getting the DGA nomination might be a good thing, since the stats would say that Taika Waititi is much more likely than not to be bounced.

I'm disappointed that Olivia Wilde missed in the debut feature category.

I finally watched Booksmart last night and I'm also disappointed that Olivia didn't make it in. The aesthetics of it were very nice!

The pool scene was where I really took note of the visuals (it was already a great movie at that point particularly in terms of the writing and acting, but it's been a while since this sort of mainstream-style comedy has looked that stylish).

IA, the pool scene was so well-done! I also loved the visuals during the karaoke scene and the last airport scene. She really elevated what could've turned out as a standard teen comedy!

The pool scene felt way too reminiscent of EIGHTH GRADE for me, even down to the perfume genius cue

Olivia definitely deserved a nom for booksmart.

I think Gerwig is DOA. I mean the bias against women directors combined with the bias against films about women plus the only place she's showed up is the Critic's Choice Awards (lmao).

Who is the last person to show up with almost no precursors? Probably Benh Zeitlin, right? Even Paweł Pawlikowski showed up for BAFTA.

It seems like Little Women is benefiting from a late surge, so I wouldn't count Gerwig out.

But ironically, missing here probably increases Phillips' chances of a nomination, in that if he had gotten in I would be singling him out as the weak link instead of Waititi.

Or who knows, maybe one of the seemingly solid four will miss, like when the Academy dumped Ridley Scott out of nowhere in 2015.
