I gave a stylist at one of those salons in the mall a nearly 50% tip. Granted it wasn't a very expensive hair cut but it was after a surgery and she was polite and made me look and feel pretty after a few weeks of looking horrible.

50% tip for hairstylists is usually what you are supposed to tip, though

Is it? Not being sarcastic I’ve asked so many people and I never get a answer that high I never know what’s right because sometimes my hair takes hours so 20% isn’t enough but sometimes it’s quick but it cost a lot and then I’m like well that seems okay

It's the unspoken standard rate for tipping, because hairstylists can literally work hours on a client's hair and only get paid for the average $40 cut. I have always tipped 30% to 50%. I'm speaking from experience as a stylist and having stylist friends that have rates from $15/cut to $600/color.
I've sat for 8 hours to get my hair colored and I realized my stylit at the time closed his entire schedule for the day just to work on my hair. I can't imagine paying him just $180 and $20 tip for a whole day's work when he easily could have made 10 times that amount if he worked on his other (and richer) clients.

Don't let me rain on your parade though! There are people who don't even tip and think the asking rate is a flat rate... They're mostly straight men.

I have never had a $40 hair cut, the price is normally around $20+tip. It has never taken hours.

You know 2 people can live different lives right? I realoy don't know why you expect me to pay the same prices as you do? Did you not read ANY of my comments?

I unfortunately have had a $40 haircut, it's called "living in a major city while having long and thick hair"

My hair regularly costs me over $200 before a tip, and you're telling me I'm supposed to be tipping $100? That would essentially be paying her $50 an hour. I love my stylist and tip her well, but fuck that!

i personally tip my hair stylist by the hour and not a percentage. like the other commenter, i also have a lot of hair that takes extra time to work on, so i'll tip anywhere from $15-25 an hour depending on what's been done and if the stylist actually listened to what i wanted. for scale, my hair cuts are $150 (before tip) because i get the ouidad curly cut at an upscale salon and it generally takes around 2 hours just for that.

Lol no. 20 percent is usually what everyone gives unless it’s a men’s cut, which run about 50 at my salon. They usually put down 25% for that.

Granted we’re a higher end salon and people are more generous around the holidays but 50% isn’t normal

No, of course it’s not. If you get a $10 haircut, fine, but otherwise - no. Fuck no.

LOL no. I tip like $5, my haircuts usually take 30 minutes or less.

America’s tipping culture is so ridiculous

Yep and they’re in such denial about it...

This is a ridiculous take. No one is in denial about it but unless people vote to get the GOP out of power, there's absolutely nothing we can do about it. Dems and other Liberals want to pay people a living wage so people won't have to survive on tips but they're blocked by the Republicans.

It’s not ridiculous, it’s just a fact. Look at the post where celebrities endorsed tipping reform and raising the minimum wage and see the staggering amount of people who said they didn’t want it.
