Director James Cameron said he thinks “it’s a certainty” that the long-delayed sequel to his 2009 film “Avatar” will do better than Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame.” Earlier this year, Endgame made $2.79 billion, surpassing “Avatar” to become the highest-grossing movie of all-time. It’s a record Cameron held onto for a little over two decades, with his 1997 classic “Titanic” sitting atop the global box office charts until “Avatar” took its place.

“I think it’s a certainty,” Cameron said in an interview with USA Today. “But let’s give Endgame their moment and let’s celebrate that people are going to the movie theater.”

He continues, “I don’t want to sound snarky after I took the high road (by offering congratulations). But they beat us by one quarter of a percent. I did the math in my head while driving in this morning. I think accountants call that a rounding error.”

Cameron added that Endgame’s success gives him hope that his sequels could still achieve major box office success despite the rising popularity of streaming services. “This gives me heart to go forward,” he says.

“Avatar 2” is “scheduled” for a December 2021 release.
