Agreed. The original was perfect, leave it (home) alone.

Plus it's 2019 and there's cell phones, social media, etc. So if they stick with the premise of them being a large well-to-do family, the idea of them not being able to get in touch with their kid seems like it'll be a lot harder to pull off. Not impossible, but harder.
