I think the situation with Syngin and Tania is one of the very rare and few instances where the man in the relationship is a decent person and it's unfortunate that Tania is so inconsiderate.

Michael is a fucking creep and no one will convince me otherwise; his ex wife and Juliana are too good for him.

Yeah, Syngin is giving us that first hand look at a man in an abusive relationship. It happens more than people know but that whole "oh he's so clingy" and diminishing his feelings is so unsettling. Then totally just keeping him as isolated as humanly possible, including leaving him with utter strangers to do their housework to run off to another country for a month!

the isolation is always the saddest thing for the immigrants on this show. like I studied immigration under a really top scholar in grad school and having a strong cultural community is SO essential to the immigrant experience, and these people usually end up in like, Ohio or Kentucky faced with a bunch of assholes accusing them of being frauds with NO social support EXCEPT their fiances, which isn't enough! And Tania's pulling that out from under him and her mother is expecting a servant! These people really have no concept of what true culture shock is like and it makes me just s;kfjdkl.

It reminds me of how awful people in Oklahoma were to Pao and look at her idea of OK now? She's scarred. But Miami is full of her culture and she's thriving.

I've known many first gen immigrants from all over. Their ability to feel safe depends on the sense of community. It's not being clingy. Humans are herd animals in the end! We're not frigging cougars or something that roams alone most of the time.

tbh I'm white and I think Oklahoma would traumatize me lol, I had a good friend who lived there and it sounded horrifying. Pao needed to get the FUCK outta there and I'm glad she insisted. But I even find myself feeling bad for some of the really nasty unsympathetic immigrants when they talk about feeling like they're in jail because they can't drive, have no friends, live in the middle of nowhere, can't work, have no culture, etc etc

Totally agree, even the worst people shouldn't be subjected to such isolation. I wouldn't wish it on an enemy, it's crippling.

I'm a hermit for the most part but even I get stir crazy after awhile. I got snowed in for 4 days and it was not healthy mentally for me. I still need to have my own money, my own transportation, my own ability to just go to the park and hangout with everyone else's dogs, you know. *shiver*

Then these folks get here and they know nobody. They're held at arms distance. Then their SO is out there having to be gone for 8 hours a day at least for work. While you're just working on your frigging shed house that your future MIL was "so kind" to move her frigging tanning bed out of... THAT WAS HER SHE-SHED.
