that's because it's not. jesse lacey IS disgusting and he absolutely took advantage of his status to groom young, underage fans, but the bulk of the music is not "about children." Anyone who is remotely familiar with them knows this, and most of their CDs are also heavy on christian themes/are religious and are more about that than relationships.
Their first cd is all about Jesse's age-appropriate girlfriend cheating on him with his then best friend, John Nolan (of tbs fame). Deja Entendu was inspired by movie/movie quotes and deals a lot with his grappling with fame, being on the road, the fear of being washed up, etc. it deviated from just being about breakup and girls, which is partly why it was so heavily praised at the time because it showed their ~growth. i think you can guess a lot of the themes on the devil and god are raging inside me on your own, but it was also written while jesse was grappling with depression/anxiety/etc. after the success of deja, and a lot of the songs are against that
jesse lacey is disgusting and as a former brand new stan, it def has tainted the music for me, but to say that the lyrics are written about children is not accurate, either. the only song i can think of outright about a child is "limousine" which was about a 7 year old girl killed in a car accident on long island. we can hate jesse lacey and acknowledge him for the pig he is without bending the truth
edit: not to say none of his songs might be ~tainted, but again, the "bulk" of the work being about children is not accurate. i should also say i never listened to anything past the devil and god (i listened to daisy once and it sucked and i dropped off the band at that point), so i can't speak for their more recent stuff (i think they toured/had a new cd a few years ago?)
we can hate jesse lacey and acknowledge him for the pig he is without bending the truth
yeah it really threw me. i was a big fan as well but completely checked out when the scandal broke so i was like holy shit how did i miss something this big!?
