I mean I do think in general pop girls never get the respect they deserve because they're all thought as of pretty industry puppets.

They only get some~ respect if they write their own music. I always felt that about someone like Taylor. A good chunk of the reason she gets praise is because she's one of the few hugely successful artists that writes her own songs (yeah I know she has co-writers but overall its Taylor) compared to other girls.I always wondered how the reception might've been had she not written those songs...cause people don't usually praise those types of songs.

Taylor’s not the only one who writes her songs, but she was smart to make it part of her narrative.

I know but she is one of the few female singers who's gotten hugely successful and very much recognized by it.

others like mariah, beyonce, madonna, janet "write" their songs but they don't know how to compose them. they'll hum their melodies or submit their lyrics and someone else will transpose or construct a song from that. taylor actually composes her own songs and that's why she is more legitimized and respected as an author.

mte , melodies and stong structure are SO much harder to do than just coming up with some lyrics

mariah is more of a composer, producer, and writer than taylor will ever be though. it was mariah's idea to remix 'fantasy' with ol dirty bastard. she created her own melodies and minibeats just as much as björk.

mte Mariah is a master composer. Her creative use of samples alone is really genius, and I'm pretty sure she's the one who comes up with them. She really does not get her full dues

That’s not what traditional composing means. Mariah doesn’t play any instruments and can’t read or write notes and in her own words she hums melodies to musicians who then transpose it into actual music.

No she really cannot. She admitted in an interview that she hums melodies to musicians.

ia, I don't think her singing or dancing abilities would take her very far

I would argue that Taylor only got that much praise about her songwriting because she started off as a non-threatening, non-sexual country artist. If she had been a ~sexy pop girl (like Shakira after her crossover) or a party pop girl like Kesha, she wouldn't have the same acknowledgment.

Oh I know and agree. She absolutely benefitted from her image being more covered up compared to the previous and current girls. It's not a coincidence that as she got older she started she started getting get sexier~. Going from "she wears short skirts, I wear sneakers" to
"tight little skirt, thing that you like" was very planned and calculated by her and her team.

But I still wonder if even when she started out and covered up would she have had that same respect had those song not being written by her? People and music journalists are always ready to clown on girls talking about their feelings especially if they're in a pop genre.

I mean tbf Britney started out pretty raunchy at a young age and she got trashed for it. (even though it should've been aimed at her people and label rather her).

It's interesting how controlled that has to be for pop stars cause I think Taylor didn't start doing that till 1989 when she was in her late 20s. It's very curated how they had transition into all that.

she was 25 (or 6 weeks away from it don't @ me age police) when 1989 came out but she still had much more of a 'good girl' persona then despite having had however many very public relationships - which is of course her right and nothing wrong with that, but it's weird to see there were still fans who were scandalised at the idea of her singing about sex on eg False God and lost their minds when she said 'shit' in i did something bad.
