She was discouraged by her managers from ever even auditioning for the groundbreaking film.
Their reasoning behind that was that her image was basically not Asian enough,
Brenda Song has been working with Disney since 2000.
She has auditioned for Caucasian roles her entire career.
For this specific role, they were not going to let her do it.
They were going to fault her for having worked her whole life.
