HBO execs screened the pilot over the summer and were not thrilled with the results. They sent it back to be re-edited and still hated it. The series was doomed from the start due to budget overruns, personnel issues

Mte! I was excited primarily because of the female showrunner, and that it was a female heavy production. I know I'm reading too much into "creative differences", but I also remember the stories about HBO execs complaining about the lack of strip clubs in Northern Ireland during production of the first season of GoT.
