Motherless Brooklyn is a novel by Jonathan Lethem that was first published in 1999. The story is set in Brooklyn, and follows Lionel Essrog, a detective who has Tourette's, a disorder marked by involuntary tics.
Whoopi brings up his film. EN says the character is a hot mess, a lot of paradoxes, he’s brilliant but also has Tourette’s Syndrome and OCD. More extra than Forrest Gump and Rain Man, e.g. underdog character you can root for but he was tougher than that. Abby feels like it’s pure raw talent. EN says he couldn’t have made the film without the cast, names some [includes Willem Dafoe, Bruce Willis, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Alec Baldwin] who did it for no money [Idk if he literally meant free, or for scale or lower than their normal fee]. His tribe of NY actors rallied around him and made it possible. He worked on it for many years, in between his other film projects. Life happens, and so on, finally he got it made and finished.
