I always wondered how he felt about playing a cop on New Girl.

Like, I get it’s a comedy and they wouldn’t delve into the deep issues there, but it felt so...sad to see this sweet, silly man join the force and just sidestep all the nasty, racist, murderous shit associated with the LAPD.

True of Brooklyn 99, too. They touch on it a little more than New Girl did, but it's still pretty rare and mostly lighthearted.

I tried but I just couldn’t get into that show because they just treated it in such a lighthearted manner. It felt like they were pushing this big lie to cover up the evil that runs through the system.

Like no, cops are not fun. They’re 99 percent assholes. They treat citizens unfairly and will bend any rule to lock you up again and again. Traitors to their people.

(Okay, the second paragraph is pretty angry, but I’m angry.)

it was the worst plot/character decision on the show imo and they handled it poorly even in that episode where they lightly touch on how activists/other black people would perceive him. it makes me mad every time i rewatch it cause there was no reason to make him a cop, particularly with todays climate.

Yeah! Horrible timing, and completely tone deaf to push the black guy into a job that really goes against his skin color and community.

I’m pretty sure it was a plot throughout season 4 onward. His non white girlfriend suggests the career to him as well. It was totally out of left field for such a gentle character.

Yeah I was wondering that too recently! Winston is basically like... the sweetest guy, probably my ideal guy if I'm being honest. Making him a cop felt like it came way outta left field.
