lol thank you for your nice comment :)
" The same people will complain students are falling behind and how education needs to change, but then they actively reject attempts to make progress because its not what they're used to." MTE!!! Americans are always handwringing about how we're falling behind in the competitive global market and that our math skills are worse than students living in Asian or European countries or wherever the fuck, but then when you try to adopt that method (in this case, Singapore math), then everyone gets so up in arms about it. this is just a theory but IMO a lot of those people (including a lot of commenters in this post) are really defensive because they feel bad about not being able to immediately grasp something that is seemingly for like, 7-year-olds. But they shouldn't feel bad because it's just not what we're used to! But if they put in just the tiniest effort and practice, they would pick it up easily too and understand its benefits.

This post got me so heated because I'm seeing all these people talking about how they tutor and how they don't get it, because like....let's be real, they didn't put in any effort to try to learn it and master it themselves. Like yall shouldn't be tutoring to be honest, if you're going to be so defensive, inflexible, and stubborn. Like, even if Common Core's methods/content are sound, of course it will fail if people aren't able to implement it properly-- if teachers don't understand how to teach it (which could be because they weren't properly trained by the county/state/whatever) and parents are self-righteous and resistant to change. Then of course children are going to get mixed messages and also not want to use the CC methods.

this really bothers me because in healthcare, science, medicine, etc. evidence-based practices is a big thing. Why should education be any different? Shouldn't we use pedagogical methods that are proven to work and not just do things just because that's the way we're used to?? Not to toot my own horn (okay maybe just a little lol) but I used to tutor full-time (although I work in a completely different line of work now) and I was really good at that job and the favorite teacher for the students. I think it has to do a lot with the fact that I just put in more effort-- I tried to prep/study for things if I was given the heads-up (we often weren't because we were never sure exactly what students would come in and who would be taken off the waitlist) and would try different methods for students to approach problem solving from multiple angles.

The ultimate goal should be to help students, and not just brainlessly pass on our knowledge without considering whether this is ultimately useful for them.
