I am always helping my roommate's 4th grader with the Common Core math. It completely broke the brains of both the child's father and grandmother. Grandma got really really pissed off about it, and i know the internet hates it, so I was like, all right, I took graduate level stats, let me look at this.

And like??? Apparently I've been doing math in my head the Common Core way all along because I found it super efficient and easy.

I like the common core way because it prepares people to actually use math in real life. It's pretty much how I do math in my head too.

Thank goodness my boyfriend has a master’s in math, because I was completely useless when it came to my kid’s homework. Her teacher this year, despite all of the warnings she received, is actually the best for her - for the first time in her life, she has a solid A in math (no cheating, I asked). I was so happy that I almost cried.

Ahh that's so good! Sometimes a teacher that gives a lot of warnings--though it may not be a perfect or even a good warning system--is also a teacher that is behind your kid 100%. It's so nice to see.

Same. I didn’t learn common core in school but it’s how I always processed math. Then I hear people saying “it doesn’t make any sense” and I’m like..... do my ways of thinking not make any sense ??? Lol

Common Core math IS efficient and a much better method of actually ensuring that kids gain actual mathematical sense. There might be other issues with Common Core, but imo mindlessly learning long division or w/e is not one of them

Common core confused me until I realized it's what my brain naturally always did. I can see how it's helpful for people that aren't good at math because it teaches kids to do those steps that I always thought was normal.

I'd like to take a look at common core again but the few times I've seen it, it seemed confusing as hell and also seemed to add a lot of unnecessary extra steps. idk, I didn't struggle with math until grade 10.

I just looked up Common Core.

It’s so simple. What is hard about this?

Edit: I was in the gifted math program and was in the top 5% nationwide so I guess it would be easier for me to understand this but still it doesn’t seem that confusing.

Lol.
I realized that after I posted.
Everyone in my family can math so until I got to high school I didn’t realize that was not the status quo.

Haha I truly envy you! It was my one true weakness and I’ll forever be bitter.

see, math was always my weak spot. but common core is SO logical lol it's just the workaround in my head that I use to do math and I wish I'd been taught that way because it makes it sooooo much easier!

parents don't like it because it's a different method of teaching and they're still stuck on what they were taught
