Weezer has given a gold record to the fan started a Twitter account begging them to cover Toto's song "Africa." The girl started the campaign in 2017 when she was 14, and it picked up steam when it started to go viral. The band gave in and released the cover in May 2018.
It topped the iTunes chart the next day, spent 15 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and spawned a video starring "Weird" Al Yankovic. Mary also got to meet Pat Wilson, Weezer's drummer and the producer on the song, when the band's tour stopped in Ohio in the summer of 2018.
