I’m excited the show’s back and that she found another topic she really wanted to do. This is a really interesting topic, and she teased that this series was gonna touch on stuff that happened in 1989 which makes me think that she’s gonna cover the opening of Splash Mountain and the beginning of Disney’s Eisner era

I don't know how people talk about Song of the South but never touch on Splash Mountain. The thing is so fascinating. I'm old enough that I remember when Splash Mountain opened and was always so confused they based the ride on a movie Disney tries to pretend that doesn't exist.

that is really interesting. it never occurred to me, and i've ridden the thing so many times. i just assumed the characters appeared in other cartoons that weren't as steeped in controversy (which in hindsight is impossible given the nature of them but this was my preteen logic).

If you were to poll Disneyland guests I bet more of them would know that Splash Mountain has reused animatronics than know it was based on Song of the South lol. Most of them probably think it’s an original ride. I’m more impressed that they managed to make Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah one of the most iconic Disney songs ever while attempting to bury the movie it came from.

I really like this Defunctland video about it. A lot of the episode is dedicated to another ride, but the beginning and end of it focus on the film and Splash Mountain:
