Phoebe and Joey (Phoey? Joebe?) are the Friends that never paired off -- but were they ever meant to be more than friends? In this video, we explore the possibility and charms of "keeping it platonic."

it was often hinted that they will become a couple especially in the earlier seasons and it was obvious that phoebe had a crush on joey. I read somewhere that the writers wanted them to become endgame but loved paul rudd that they decided to keep him.

yeah, they were initially going to be revealed to have been having casual sex throughout the show's run, but they nixed it. it seems like they were building toward something in the episode(s) where joey dated ursula, but beyond that they just sort of made jokes about them being each other's backups and stuff.

Omg lol that would be totally in character for phoebe to have a throwaway line at the end about how her and joey were sleeping together the whole time i love it

right? but then there is also a line that's included in the dvd version of one episode where rachel asks why nobody told her that they could see she still loved ross, and phoebe goes, "that would be like telling monica, 'you like things clean,' or saying, 'joey, you're gay.'" so who tf knows.

for a show called Friends, its stupid for three couples to be formed out of the six people of which two are siblings so not actual friends.

I'm happy they nixed it. It would have been weird for them all to pair up with each other and I liked Mike.

Yeah I recently rewatched the episode where everyone’s turning 30 and Phoebe finds out she’s actually 31. She gets upset bc she’s so “behind” on all the things she wanted to do before turning 31, like getting the perfect kiss. Joey runs after her and kisses her and she’s like, “Yeah, that’s it, thanks.” idk the whole thing felt very romantic for them in a way I hadn’t remembered from watching the show when it was first airing.

I still think Phoebe should have ended up with David.

I liked how they brought him back to sort of close that off, but he was always my favourite.

I think I'd mostly gone off Friends by the time Paul Rudd's character came in so I didn't care much for him.

i loved phoebe with david, and i feel like they were supposed to be endgame, but then paul rudd came along and he was incredible, so they retconned david to justify phoebe/mike.

Yeah, I've said that to someone before. I think maybe if Paul Rudd hadn't signed on for more or whatever they would have kept David and had that be her end game.
