Joker just premiered at Venice, where it had a eight-minute standing ovation. Here's what the critics are saying about the film. Joaquin is coming for the Oscar.

The film currently has a 75 on MetaCritic.

"Joker" wants to be a movie about the emptiness of our culture. Instead, it’s a prime - and dangerous - example of it https://t.co/GPqm26UiFE

Time hated it, says Phoenix is acting way too hard.

Joaquin Phoenix is astonishing in 'Joker,' and the movie is a hypnotically perverse, ghoulishly gripping knockout. My review from Venice: https://t.co/0xCVGmcSmk

Variety, on the other hand, thought Phoenix and the film as a whole, was astonishing.

"What's so compelling about the title role, both as written and in Phoenix's full-throttle, raw performance, is that we're encouraged to feel sympathy for the Joker even as he's clearly turning into a homicidal maniac." Read the review of #Joker: https://t.co/DURbfLCRit

As did The Hollywood Reporter.

JOKER: visionary & derivative. radical & cowardly. the boldest comic book movie since The Dark Knight & also just another day in Chuckletown.

JOKER is all contradictions & chaotic evil. for better or worse, it’s the movie the Joker would want.

And for better or worse, superhero movies will probably never be the same after this.
