I always find it weird how at US universities they call anyone who teaches classes a "professor", for a minute there my sense of McConaughey's academic capabilities was way inflated.

The US, and Hogwarts. And we know how well that turned out for the unfortunate wizarding students who learned how to hate each other for wearing different scarves and brew date-rape potions, but not do basic math or find even their own country on a map.

Ironically enough they probably learned more geography having to listen to his tales of travel than during the entire rest of their time at Hogwarts.

They don’t actually. We all have specific titles (I’m a visiting instructor with a PhD so my students call me Dr. Funnyface). From my experience it’s people who don’t get the structure that call themselves or others professors. Don’t get me wrong I think the whole system is stupid but it does drive me bonkers to see someone with a BA or BS who has adjuncted ons course calling themselves a professor on LinkedIn bc it implies they are a fully ranked professor which is not what they are.

They're usually called "adjunct professors," people that work in the field usually full-time but then teach one class one day a week. I bet that's what is at UT, some of my best classes there were taught by adjunct because they were actually doing the day-to-day grind and weren't living in the ivory tower!
