August 19, 2019 This past weekend, three Broadway musicals took their final bows and closed up shop. The Cher Show, a jukebox musical starring three versions of Cher, ended its run with $1,040,097, the show's best week since January. King Kong and Pretty Woman didn't hit the same heights, making $845,976 and $691,231 respectively in their final weeks. All three had announced closings earlier this summer after struggling to make a dent in the box office.
Tops at the Broadway box office this week were Hamilton, The Lion King, Moulin Rouge!, To Kill A Mockingbird and Wicked.

August 19, 2019Caroline, or Change, which had a successful run on London's West End, is transferring to Broadway starting March 13, 2020. Sharon D. Clarke, who won an Olivier Award for her performance in the title role, will lead the production at Studio 54. The musical, with a book written by Tony Kushner and music by Jeanine Tesori, is about a black maid working for a white Jewish family in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement.

August 19, 2019 Tony award-winner Kenny Leon is set to direct A Soldier's Play, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play that will play Broadway for the first time. A 1981 Off-Broadway production of the play starred Denzel Washington and Samuel L. Jackson, and was later adapted into a film, but never made it to Broadway. David Alan Grier, who starred in previous productions of the play and the film, and Blair Underwood are set to star.
The play, written by Charles Fuller, is set in 1944 and follows a murder mystery centered around the death of a black Sergeant who is found on a Louisiana army base, which an investigator sets out to solve. The play begins previews on December 27th at the American Airlines Theatre, with an opening scheduled for January 21st.

August 21, 2019The cast has been set for the limited Off-Broadway run of the new horror musical All Hallows Eve. The show will play the Connelly Theatre October 18th through November 2nd. Book, lyrics, direction, and puppet design are all from Martin P. Robinson (Little Shop of Horrors), with music from Paul Rudolph (Sesame Street). The plot: Twins Eve and Evan enter a house and meet a demon who has been searching for a pair just like them.
The cast includes Jennifer Barnhart, Tyler Bunch, Aubrey Clinedinst, Austin Michael Costello, Cedwan Hooks, Haley Jenkins, Kathleen Kim, Marca Leigh, Spencer Lott, and Kaitee Tredway.

August 20, 2019Lincoln Center Theater has announced a new Broadway-bound musical called Flying Over Sunset, which explores LSD use by Aldous Huxley, Clare Boothe Luce and Cary Grant. In the first act, the three try LSD separately, which actually happened in real life. In the second act, they all try it together, which was imagined for the purposes of this show. The musical will be written and director by James Lapine (Sundays in the Park with George), with music by Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) and lyrics by Michael Korie (Grey Gardens). The cast will include Tony Yazbeck as Grant, Carmen Cusack as Luce, and Henry Hadden-Paton as Huxley. The show will begin performances on March 12th at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, with an opening on April 16th.
