yeah and fans demand artists be on spotify / itunes b/c that's the norm - it's a shitty cycle for lesser known musicians. lots of independent artists i know are switching to Bandcamp - I like it from what I've seen. It allows the musician to set their price and decide if they want to offer digital downloads and/or streaming, and they only take a small fee from sales.
a record can be anywhere from 10-24 songs, a single stream is not worth the same amount
i think if you were to compare payouts to artists, they wouldn't be very different per song and i don't say this in defense of spotify but to call out record labels who have been stealing from their artists for decades
i once read that 1 billion streams (a smash hit basically) only makes the artist around $4-5M USD. why do i say only? because their managers, the record company, the producers and fellow songwriters etc all get percentages of it as part of their contracts. there are even misguided people who sign contracts that give their attorneys a cut of the money because they don't know (or care to know, hi dumbass soundcloud rappers!) that its not industry standard.
there was (i think?) a rolling stone article about how musicians only make 12% of all income generated by the music industry. its wild!
Yeah, and I’m not going to act like I know that much about the industry but I remember Jessica Simpson said (way before streaming was a thing) that recording albums doesn’t make any money but touring brings in a little, she said endorsements from being a celebrity was where she made her money

they're not dissimilar to contracts with music stores from before streaming

ETA: Also I think if you are a singer-songwriter and your single or album does really well, there's also the money that comes from that too I think.

So do celebrities get much from YouTube and MV views?
