I think it was because of child pornography being somewhere in the mix? I remember some users calling staff lazy for not wanting to deal with it.

Def what the user above said. I (thank God) never saw any child porn but it was such a problem that iTunes took it off the app store for awhile and then they scrambled to clean it up.

because it was a quick band-aid against the rampant awful porn and bots on the site

it didn't stop porn bots and its algorithm keeps flagging non-porn content

i've read conflicting accounts. the most popular two being that tumblr was being used to sex solicit sex from underage individuals and spread child porn and the other was that apple's app store was pulling all apps that featured sexual content by a hard deadline and if tumblr didn't remove the porn it would be pulled from the app store.

Apple is pretty shitty and puritanical. Everyone is talking about child porn, but Apple has been attacking pretty much everything that has adult content in it and dropping it from their stores. So, they dropped tumblr and tumblr felt forced to ban adult content, which somehow they fucked it up so badly that porn is still rampant, except the bad kind remained while the comic artist who occasionally drew tasteful nudity got blacklisted. They are doing the same with other apps that feature art/comics that have adult content and its like, apple wants everything to be PG and pure. People are getting nailed for stuff that doesn't even involve nudity because it has "adult situations."

Apple pretty much controls everything though so I expect their stranglehold to continue and adult content to basically disappear from the net except for actual porn including child porn who doesn't care about being on the apple store.
