he basically means he takes pride in it as the patriarchy tells him to. many men assume women don't gaf about their names. it's weird, but welcome to the patriarchy, i guess.

Yeah, it's ridiculous. I hate this expectation that women should be totally fine with giving up their identity after 20/30/40/however many years and just be subsumed into a man's life. And it's so ingrained in our culture that so many women will do it without a second thought, as if who they are and what they've done and their family and legacy mean absolutely nothing when compared to a man's and then write it off as 'yeah, but that's just what's done. I can't not do it' or whatever heteronormative patriarchal bullshit they've been told and are telling themselves.
