Thousands gathered at San Juan, Puerto Rico to protest and demand Governor Ricardo Rosselló's resignation after the leak of hundreds of derisive and offenseive private chat messages between him and members of his inner circle where they expressed a violent fantasy about shooting San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, made mysogynistic comments about New York councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito which also expressed violence against her, homophobic remarks about singer Ricky Martin, and gruesome jokes about the victims of Hurricane Maria. The chats also revealed how they strategized to sow public discourse in their favor by working behind the scenes with local media and sharing priviliged information with individuals who were not government officials.
While Puerto Rico's chief fiscal officer and the Secretary of State resigned after their participation in the chat was revealed, Governor Rossello has not.
The leaked chats were just the straw that broke the camel's back after charges of corruption, fraud, and money laundering have been brought up against members in the governor's administration.
As protesting continued into the night, police fired tear gas into the crowd after they'd broken down barricades at the Governor's mansion.
Those involved in the chats have been asked by the Department of Justice to turn in their phones for investigation.

The governor won't resign. "The demonstrations that took place in the afternoon and evening of yesterday have not gone unnoticed for me, my family, and certainly for anyone in the town of Puerto Rico. It was a broad participation that I respect, not only as a democratic exercise, but as a natural manifestation of the anger at recent events.
"Many people did it properly, the vast majority. Others chose the wrong methods and violence, even with the use of weapons, Molotov cocktails and other explosives, causing injuries and impacting officers of the Puerto Rico Police. This challenge to law and order will be addressed accordingly.
"In the past few days I have apologized to the Puerto Rican people and that request remains alive. I have the commitment, stronger than ever, to carry out the public policy for which we have worked so hard in all areas of government. I recognize the challenge before me for recent controversies, but I firmly believe that it is possible to restore confidence and that we can, after this painful and painful process, achieve reconciliation."
If he were to resign, then the secretary of state (a position that's currently empty as he just resigned from being part of the group chat) would be next in line, followed by the Treasurer.
