I was getting so angry at Mary Louise dismissing Celeste so quickly and easily. These performances are absolutely amazing. Meryl and Reese play off each other so well and I look forward to more of those scenes. That thing Meryl did with her necklace when they were talking. No one told her to do that. She’s so exceptionally talented. Those little nuances that she brings to a character are so effortless.

It's really not that hard to understand. Even if she saw him beating on Celeste herself she'd still think he was her angel.

I'm still watching episode 2, but there definitely is some victim blame-y attitude to Mary Louise as well. Like I feel if Celeste told her Perry abused her she would be like 'well, what did you do'.

I think the suspicion is something that’s been cooking for awhile and is coming to a head as her grief processes. And mothers do put blinders on for their abusive sons. Celeste is also secretive and going through her own issues, she was in denial about her abuse for so long she’s not going to start divulging that information freely, she even blames herself and downplays it as she tells Mary-Louise.

I think you've already hit on what she's trying to do - protect other people's memory of him, though also to a degree her own (because it's hard to accept that Jekyll was the facade and those seeming acts of love were all Hyde playing a long con, so she plays these mental gymnastics bringing blame upon herself). To do that means denying abuse where she can and minimising it where she can't, though that's detrimental to her own recovery.

Which like you say is a house of cards, but probably true to the stage of recovery she's in and the complexity of having been bereaved in the middle of that.

I didn't really see it that way--I thought she said "he beat me up sometimes" almost casual, like referencing a fact that's already been established

lol the entitled parents who think their baby boy and/or girl can do no wrong even when they are grown is a very, very real thing.

i don't think you can say that the show is trying to make us feel that mary louise has never heard that before or that she had no idea.

it's obvious the show is going with "Mary Louise has never seen evidence besides Celeste's word"

I don’t think that’s what’s happening here. I think Mary Louise just simply doesn’t believe her precious Perry would ever do something like that OR that if he did... he was provoked. She clearly doesn’t like Celeste. Just seems she tolerates her based on their interactions. So doesn’t surprise me that she’s dismissing everything she’s saying.

Celeste is exhausted and coming to terms with the fact that she was in an abusive relationship as we can see from her therapy sessions. She’s still downplaying it and thinks she played a role in the abuse, so her not going into detail most likely had to do with all that plus the fact that Mary Louise is overbearing af and is always questioning her - plus in that scene she’s downright arguing with her and questioning if the abuse even happened.

We have no definitive way of knowing if Mary Louise knows the details of the case, but she surely knew everything Celeste “left out” which we can assume means she’s privy to most of them.

Mary Louise puts Perry on a pedestal. She’s never going to believe a bad word about him.
