brakes? I thought the issue was that the gear shifter didn't make it clear what gear it was in, so people would shift to Neutral thinking it was in Park and the cars would roll

This accident was how I found out that a lot of Americans don't put their handbrake on every time they park, which was pretty mindblowing to me.

Same. I do it all the time. I remember getting into an argument with a few people about this. I was literally taught it was the parking brake.

All these articles were calling it the "emergency" brake and I was like, uhhhh, it should definitely not only be used in emergencies...

I was taught to only use it if I'm parking on a hill.

I live in Sweden now where you have to do an ice driving test and all this shit to get a license (which is prob why their accident fatality rates are low). Anyway, yesterday my husband and I were watching Handmaid's Tale (season 1), in one scene an ambulance crashes due to ice on the roads and my husband was like, "Why don't they know how to drive on ice?" and I said, "~we don't take ice driving courses~", he was legit shook and started going off about how dangerous driving is in the US (I am from southern California and the 405 scares the shit out of him).

The handbrake should be engaged whenever the car is parked. It's so strange to me people wouldn't be taught to do that, it takes 0.5 of a second for so much extra safety.

We don't get ice but the city I live in at the moment, half the cars don't put their headlights on when it rains or there's low visibility and it drives me up the wall, it's so dangerous. The lights are so I can see you, not so you can see me!

That confused me as well, I guess it’s maybe something to do with automatic cars being so prevalent over there? I’ve only ever driven manual cars, and I was taught to use the handbrake whenever I’m stopped

Perhaps, though even with an auto you should put the handbrake on. Manuals should be parked in gear and they are less likely to roll then, but you would still never park it without the handbrake on.

I'm American and was also only taught to use it if on a hill. The handbrake in my car is so hard to move too that when I have had to use it takes me forever to unlock it.

I imagine the more you use it the more it will loosen up.

I don’t do it on my truck unless I’m parked on an incline.
