HIMYM Showrunner Says People Who Wanted Jamie Lannister Redemption are Why We Have Trump

In a now deleted series of tweets, Carter Bays, former showrunner of How I Met Your Mother, had some words for people disappointed in Jamie Lannister's apparent aborted redemption arc on the latest episode of Game of Thrones. He says that people who wanted Jamie Lannister to develop/change or be redeemed are why we have Donald Trump as our current ( Read more... )

There is a big difference between expecting better from someone who is actively trying to be a better person and has been choosing to do the right thing lately and from someone like Trump who consistently refuses to ever do the right thing or be a better person. Like, this is a pretty ignorant set of tweets.

Right, I don't even understand what he's trying to say.

I can agree with him that we should celebrate people who've been doing the right thing all along over those who turn a corner ... but Trump is neither, so how is that relevant?

Yeah when did Trump ever pretend to be good or "come to the good side"? Not saying that Jamie deserves a redemption arc, but really confused as to what he means. Trump has always been VERY open about who he is and it has never been pretending to be good, not even the least bit.

people constantly go for that "Trump finally became a president" whenever he makes a speech without denigrating people or inspiring hate so

yep

and like, there was a way for jaime to not be totally redeemed but also not totally devolve? like, he didn't have to do the fan service kill cersei thing but he didn't have to negate seven seasons of development

this! idt jaime is a good person or could ever make up for the shit he's done, but there IS a point where he makes better choices and tries to do good things, even tho that can't make up for what he's fucked up so far, and it doesn't require seeing him as a good guy.

to be disappointed that the writers ignore that development (i don't wanna call it a redemption, but it's def a development) and go back to square one is legitimate to me. most of all his line that he never cared abt the smallfolk, when his entire set-up was that he killed his own king bc that king was killing the smallfolk??

Right like I never thought or really wanted him to go murder Cersei to keep Brienne safe or whatever shit fandom imagined, but I feel like they could have at least acknowledged how Jaime and Cersei's relationship was fucked up and destructive and addictive. Instead they gave them the most romantic, die in each other's arms bullshit while having Jaime go back on all of his most defining character traits. The point is that he is a person with good tendencies (wanting to be a knight who protects people) and bad tendencies (being self-centered and obsessed with Cersei). But in this episode all of his good tendencies were thrown in the garbage and the writers tried to raise up his worst qualities as good. It just doesn't make sense for where he is now as a character.
