I have never seen a finale retroactively ruin an entire show the way this one did.

States how the major twist was set into the show in the first season

i don't know anyone who goes back and watches old episodes (a la friends, etc) because the finale tainted the show for them. it's unwatchable when you know how it ends

It really is. I can't believe I've wasted like a decade of my life watching that crap for THAT ending.

Exactly! And how can anyone invest on re-watching the show, when you know it ends in a clusterfuck?

And what's worse is that they managed to get a really good actress for the Mother. She had great chem with the Ted actor, their story was as cute as the show set up, and that was hard given the build-up. If they hadn't fucked up the ending for their season one plot ~twist, they would have been a lot more loved than they are now. But like someone else said, you can't just drop it in and re-watch parts of it like Friends, because you know every part of the show is bullshit, because of the ending.

WORST series finale of all time.

It would have worked as a series finale after season 2 or 3.

But the show had changed and evolved by the time it ended, and that finale no longer made sense for the characters.

The show was a critical darling, but was on the chopping block every year for 4 years and big bang was huge from the beginning and was making all the shows have to do better. They wrote Stella as the mother in season 4, because it looked like the end. Then came Britney. S4 ep13. When she came on tons watched. After a lot stayed. Then they went into syndecation and people became obsessed with Barney. What should have been maybe 6 years became 9 with 20 + episodes. Ugh

Yeah, I remember all of this.

So many people were tuning in to watch Britney return in some form after her breakdown. There was so much news coverage about HIMYM when she made both of her guest appearances.

I never watched this show, but I do remember how mad people were on Twitter when the finale aired. I've never seen people so angry over a TV finale.

The ending was horrible and the ending was not realistic when it came to Ted. He literally got everything he wanted, the house, job, kids and woman.
